Good Squirrel, Bad Squirrel

This is a California Ground Squirrel. The photos of this particular squirrel was at Moro Bay, CA.
He is a good squirrel.

This is a Grey Squirrel. He lives near our home in Santa Rosa,CA. He eats out of our bird feeders. This scares the birds away. We've had ongoing battles for months. I am currently winning the war.
He is a bad squirrel.

Now you know all about squirrels.

  3. I made peace with the squirrels in my back yard by putting out a corn feeder just for them and peanuts in shells. They still go for the bird feeder but I make it hard work for them: it's set so their weight closes the feeder, I have a large baffle on the feeder pole, and it's a good distance from nearby trees so they have to be fairly athletic to reach it from the top. Perhaps you've seen the Yankee Flipper bird feeder? That is my plan B. Expensive, but entertaining.

  5. how in the world can you win a war against a squirrel? I mean, it's a matter of diligence and constant monitoring of the feeders. I once saw one do a back-flip off of my feeder. it was hanging on a tree branch and too unstable for him to sustain his balance. that day I felt I had won. it's easier for me to simply not feed the birds. I would like to feed them, but the battle is simply not something I want to wage. A hat-tip to you for waging and winning.

  8. LOL! I loved this post. I am so glad that now I know about good and bad squirrels. haha! I have a wee baby squirrel that visits my platform bird feeder. There aren't any birds there these days so I figure why not let him? He's an OK squirrel, I guess. ;o)

  11. I'm sure both squirrels THINK they're being good. After all, that bird seed is such easy pickings...
