And then to think that whole families went into such cars to an uncertain future. But when the pressure is high you have to take such risks.
This is something different then your little house on wheels now. Incredible how they drove around with complete families, sleeping, cooking and not knowing where to go. My daughter was very fond of those books and read them many times as I did too. She would have loved to live in those times and had a romantic look at the travels which were not at all so romantic of course.
How much fun...to think of this as an RV. It's really amazing how folks packed their entire lives into a wagon and headed west. My hubby is from Laura Ingalls Wilder area in South Dakota.
i knew by your title it had to be a conastoga. (spelling? - too lazy to google it).i can't imagine how much your bones would ache riding day after day in that rough accomodation.
Ask a women if she could do it. I would say NO.Ask a man Yes. Most men pack nothing compared to a women on a trip.Like your pictures.
To be honest, I always wonder could I have survived the hardships of the wagon trails...I really don't see how some survived.
Wonderful to see John... and it's great to see this ones survived.
I don't think Sinbad would like riding around in that old RV.
I would like to think I am hardy enough, but I don't know....
Considering that most of the pioneers who came in conestoga wagons walked to their destination, I probably would have stayed in St. Louis.
I can't even imagine how hard life was back then. I'm sure if I were of that era, I would make it just fine..but put my soft self back there now? Nope..I would have to toughen up mighty quick, or be left behind.
I've seen one of those in one of your museums, Recon my wife & I could have coped ok
Looks like a tough life to me. But in those days I'm sure it was the adventure some people needed in their lives...or perhaps they were hoping to make a better life for themselves so a bit of discomfort would be worth it in the end.
