Snakes Alive!

Well they are out from hibernation.  I figured so a few weeks back when I saw a little garter snake slither off into the brush during a hike.  This beauty I saw alongside the road while riding Gracie.

You can see it is injured.  It appears someone shot him with a BB gun.
This was very upsetting for me to see.
This is his home.  We are just visitors.

Hopefully the injury is not mortal and he'll heal.  You can see by the number of rattles in the first photo he has been around for a few years.  I hope he has many more years left to live.

After I took this the above photo he made it to the security of a bush, coiled up, began to rattle poised to strike.  Good.  He's still got some spunk in him.

We keep our walks to open areas for her safety.

At Camp Quarantine there is a lot of cleared open space around us. Snakes will not want to traverse the open area as much and it is easy to check and make sure all is clear before letting Beans out.
I always do an under the vehicle check too before I let Beans out now.

Poor girl, she's at the end of her rope here and wants to go into the area around the trees and brush.
I feel bad for her.  She doesn't understand the danger that could be lurking there.

  2. Oh why would someone shoot the snake and then leave it to die. I have never seen a rattlesnake. When I was in your area of desert a few years ago, I walked with very noisy stamping footsteps so I would frighten any snakes away. Didn't see any so I suppose my strategy worked!

  4. First time in my life I've felt sorry for a rattlesnake. What kind of cruel person does that? BTW, good photos!
