The Barn With a Mystery Building

This barn I found along Hwy 299 out of MacArthur in northern California. I thought the steepness of the roof interesting. How could one stand on it during its construction without being tied on? One thing is for sure, the snow would not pile up on the roof. I wondered what the tall square building was used for. Maybe some of you farm folk out there could tell me.

That's where they keep the milking Giraffes. Great shot John.

looks like a corn crib to me - slatted for drying.

love the almost pyramidish look to the barn!

I agree with TexWisGirl that it's likely a corn crib.
The barn's shape is very different from anything I have seen here in Ontario.

yep, corn crib alright. and it's a nice one too. so is the barn. the round steel bin is for grain storage too. although, my dad had one of those and it ended up being a catchall for junk once it was no longer needed for grain. I like how the shadow falls across the roof of the barn. and I like the roof of the barn. good barn shot John. happy day to you and Sinbad.

The shadow of the peak on the barn makes a neat geometric pattern. I hope none of those sheets need to be replaced!

Being from the city I wouldn't have a clue. Great shot though.

That's a unusual shape for a barn. Someone must have known what they were doing when they built it.

Great shot...that is a steep roof on the barn. I guess that skinny n tall building is used for storing hay or corn!

I never feel sure that the tall building like that are for corn...I always think about transferring the corn to the crib...but maybe it is and they use some kind of belt. It just looks too old for that.

That's definitely a high pitched roof & could the other building be some kind of tobacco shed? I'm just guessing, mind you! =)

The barn is really cool, never seen shaped quite like it

Thanks for joining! =)

The tall building looks like a corn crib ... we had one like that growing up. And don't think I've ever seen such a steep barn roof!

Maybe it is a little grist mill. I like you was immediately taken to the roof of the barn and its pitch. Really an interesting one. Bet it is a real pain in the you know what to re-tin. Ours has a hole in it, but are not willing to spend all the moolah to put on a new one as we are not farmers and only use it as out attic/basement. This old farmhouse has neither and only one closet for 4 bedrooms. Such fun. The landscape around this area is so pretty. Hope all is well way out west. It is cold and rainy here. genie
