Smashed Pumpkin Fungi

At least that is what I am calling it for that was my first thought when I saw it off the trail.

I only had my little Canon point and click with me and am not sure if I want to go back lugging my tripod, big macro lens and DSLR all those miles.

I removed leaf and stick debris from it but those remaining were firmly attached, the fungi having grown around it.  These things are hard like wood.

It was overcast and drizzly with rain.  Perhaps some sunlight on it might bring out the color more.
I might go back, camera gear and all.

I wonder if one of these is what I saw a squirrel eating recently? We have a lot of similar fungi in our oak woodland.
