Let's Go Inside the Samuel P. Dinsmore Home

Lucas, Kansas
Garden of Eden

In Sam's words:
"The second story (the ground floor which I am showing here) is finished inside white coat and natural wood, California redwood, pine and oak with pressed molding.  Over 3000 feet of molding was used.  There are eleven rooms besides the bathroom, three halls, two closets with a cave and light plant under the back porch."

You enter the front door (this is not it) which was a small room being used to greet visitors and sell items.  The entry had three doorways leading off to other portions of the house plus a set of stairs leading up to the second level. The tour begins to your right into what I would guess to be a parlor.  The next four pictures are looking around the room from right to left.

All furnishings are Dinsmore's just as he had them.  Nothing was brought in to furnish the house as I understood it.  More on the stuffed animals in a later post.

Many of the pieces of furniture he created and built himself.

I don't recall what type of tile or stone he used to face the hearth with, but all of it he built.

I just could not believe the condition of the hardwood floors and linoleum which must be close to 100 years old.  Imagine how many feet have walked upon these floors and they still look remarkably well.

No two doorways in the house are of the same size, width or height.  Same for the windows, all different in size.  There was no particular reason other that it was his house and he could build it as he wished.
As I said at the beginning, I would liked to have known this man.

Even these gaming tables he built.
The inlay work was remarkable and they were as smooth as glass.

He reminds me of a lot of famous architects who also made there own furniture, wallpaper and floor designs. It was an real artist.

I am amazed by the interior, this is all so nice done with the use of wood and stone. I hadn't expected this from the outside. This man had a vision and "golden hands" to make this all so beautiful.

Its surprising, to me, to see the inside. I thought it would be sort of goofy looking, but as quirky as it is, its pretty! (I love the fireplace!)

I love the old wood floors.

Seems like a handy fellow who must have been busy most of the time. It wouldn't surprise me if he stuffed the animals himself too.

I wonder why he made every doorway a different size. Hmmm. I like his game tables!
