When we arrived late afternoon of the first day, the playa looked a little damp. You do not want to get on this thing when wet as you'll get stuck, guaranteed. But I was thinking this is September, the hottest and driest time of of the year. How can that be? So I proceeded on and things were okay with my thinking it'll get better the further on we went. It did not. I had to turn around and get off of this thing before I was really sunk, literally. Turning is the most dangerous part as that is when your momentum drops off and nasty things can happen. With wheels spinning and mud slinging up underneath I got the Little House on the Highway turned and headed back staying in the track we had just created.
Bouncing, dishes flying, we made it much to my relief. Dumb, dumb, dumb!
I motored on to the next entrance 9 miles up the road and here the playa was drier. I went out on it for only a few miles, parked and said "That's it. No more adventure." And here we stayed.
If you look closely you can see a little orange cat in the doorway and mud on the tires. This highly alkali dry lake bed dirt is horribly toxic to metal and when it is dried mud a real pain in the butt to get off. Yes, I was really mad at myself for making a mess of things on the first day.
Yeah, aren't those shadows cool. It only works like this for a few minutes.

A tricky adventure, looks like not many people around to help you out when things had gone wrong. But the pictures are great!
Agree with bieb but great shots especially the last one . Still going there where not many go.
What an awesome sight. Nice shots!
Very cool! I like your camper. And the shadows.
Is that your shadow I see on the far right? ;) That golden light sure doesn't last long enough, does it?
oops! glad you got yourself extricated. :)
I can't believe you pulled it out without a disaster. You have more guts than Bud or I. Glad you and yellow kitty are OK and the camper survived. BE CAREFUL!!! genie
The shadows are cool. And I'm glad you averted disaster.
Marvelous shots of the playa!
Whew! That was a near miss!
«Louis» is glad you were able to get out!
Never heard of the Playa before John so just off to Google it. Looks like a must see place... shame it appears inaccessible for your camper do they do 4x4 safari style trips for tourists?
Out here on the Atlantic, I've certainly had mornings which looked pretty close to your first two pictures of the Playa here. The mountains could easily be morning clouds on the horizon.
Mind you, if the Playa ever looks like the ocean does today. Get Sinbad gathered up pronto and be gone.
