Welcome to California's Beautiful Wildlife Refuges

"Something will have gone out of us as a people if we ever let the remaining wilderness be destroyed.  We simply need that wild country available to us, even if we never do more than drive to its edge and look in."
-  Wallace Stegner

That is my little car there, not an abandoned junker.

People are such pigs.

Part of the problem is our bankrupt State.

Another part of the problem are the local residents - raccoon, possums, crows, ravens and the like.

But people are the biggest problem of all.  What did this guy do?  He got some mud on his jeans, sweatshirt and shoes.  So he strips them off in the parking lot and drives home in his underwear?

These were a good pair of shoes.  Not a thing wrong with them.

When I was a little boy I don't remember seeing scenes like this.
Maybe being little I was oblivious to it but I really think not.

it's confronting and tragic; hopefully one day there's a turn-around for the better

Very good observations with a message. But how to get this further in the minds of people who are responsible for this mess. Thanks for showing.

It looks terrible, I always wonder why people take all these things with them when going into nature. You don't need all these foods and drinks when enjoying nature isn't it? The left clothes and shoes is the strangest things I have ever seen. Did you look for a naked corps in the woods?

We have so many drive in outlets and what do people do when they're finished...throw it out the window. When we were kids there were very few drive ins.You are doing the right thing by showing this mess.

I've found empty beer cans on mountaintops. Think about it...someone has the good taste and determination to reach the summit but then is stupid enough to despoil it. If someone can carry a full can up the mountain surely they should be able to carry an empty one down again.

People are pigs! How hard is it to put the trash in your car and take it home or to a gas station? We get it here too, people throwing out fast food trash. We just pick it up and hope to be an example.

John,
I do see this at many public places, where it can be easily avoided. During the Whiterock Lake Marathon thousands of sachets of energy goo, water cups, and other items are discarded by the runners. These are usually not cleaned up the very same day. Where do they end up? In the lake, of course.

Cigarette butts is another common nuisance in public places. Especially at bus/train stops/stations.

People also have started discarding soda bottles and water bottles, by the thousands, all over the country and the world.

I actually try to clean the area around the bus stop, especially if I have a grocery bag with me. I pick up the trash and put in in the trash receptacle, which is right next to the bus stop.

Thanks for posting this. I wish people would get the message that Planet Earth is the home of billions of people. One should not defecate in their own home.

Peace :)

I used to work on a series of urban fringe nature reserves in the UK - the amount of junk that turned up on our sites was stunning! And as with the boots - some seemed to be still in good condition.

Strange (or maybe stolen!)

What happens when public employees/services get cut, right? But who goes off and leaves both shoes behind? Makes you wonder if it was a prank or drunkenness.

I have no idea why people do this...and it is not just out in areas like this. We find beer bottles, pop cans and cups in out yard...I do not know why but it makes me furious.

The strip pits I drive through...people throw their trash out there. It is just as easy to take it home and dispose of.

Not good when the garbage outnumbers the wildlife. What a mess!

Alas, many a lovely place ruined by the brain free people of this world. Some folk shouldn't be allowed out.
