Seen at my local flea market last Sunday. Every state is represented by a license plate from that state cut into the shape of the state. Pretty clever. Now I don't know about the other states but the California plate is of an old style going back into the 1960's. No, I did not ask how much the seller wanted for this. It may have been at a price that would have got my interest and I just don't have anyplace to put it. It would make a great coffee table but I am married. It most likely would not pass the Home Design and Review Committee.
I'm back at the flea market this morning to see what I can see but cannot have.

Someone had a lot of time on their hands. A photograph of this would make a great poster or even a framed print. Do you think you could get away with that?
Perhaps an idea for yourself. Alone to collect plates from all states must already give great satisfaction.

There is an art gallery in Sausalito that had something very similar on display in their window for a while. Am sure they were charging a multiple of what this was going for at the flea market.
Also reminds me of my last visit to Bryce Nat'l Park--a busload of German tourists were de-bussing in a parking lot, and instead of immediately going over to the lookout spot, they spread out and began photographing license plates--they must have been having a contest of who could come up with the most state plates. I had to laugh when one woman screeched at the top of her lungs; "Texas!", to which they all of her bus-mates came running.
great piece of folk art, I agree it would make an interesting tabletop. Perhaps the wife would like it outside for garden/deck seating area? (gotta think like a woman)

Very clever, however, I agree that it would not get rave reviews from the Home Design Committee. But, it might go over well with the Man Cave, or Tricked Out Garage Review Committee. My husband has a collection of license plates from all the states and countries we have visited tacked up in his Man Garage.
I'd have been tempted to go for that map. BTW, I read where CA is going to reissue those old-style black plates so older collector's cars can get 'em.
