It is that time of the year when you give or receive a poinsettia as a gift. Days or weeks later, after all the fuss is over the plant usually winds up in the trash bin. We received this poinsettia as a gift and I just wanted to see if I could keep it going until the next season. This plant is three years old this season. Save the poinsettias! It is easier than saving whales.

You can see it is old because in the shops you don't see that green leaves . Nice one.
You have a good heart to save them. We call them "Christmas stars" here but I must admit I have never liked them and never bought one....
wow! i tried that once and it didn't make it thru summer.
You've done well to keep it three years.
It's the same over here John... so pleased my Mum kept one going for months.
I then realised it wasn't real.
My mom kept one for years...it was probably 2 ft. tall or maybe a bit taller. But I don't remember how she kept it...I do remember it blooming every Christmas though.
Are you going to share your horticulture secrets on how you kept this puppy growing? BTW, I saw Poinsettia trees in Mexico last year, growing next to mangoes and limes. In November!
You're not too far north of me, so you could potentially plant it outside in a protected spot and end up with a 2-story tall bush: http://natureid.blogspot.com/2011/12/poinsettia-122411-monterey.html. Merry, merry, John.
That's great, John. I potted the three I got this year. Hope they last as long as yours.
How wonderful!!! I shall give this a try again. When I've tried to save them as you did--they usually still don't make it.
Your poinsettia is beautiful and the fact that you have nursed it all of this time is remarkable. Now, to me, I want them in a yard like they did at our home in Palm Beach. Those, oleanders, and hibiscus were beautiful in their natural environment. Mother would pick a hibiscus bloom or two and bring it in the house and float it in water, but the was it. The rest stayed in their little home places. When I ran the flower shop - that’s another wild story - they were one big pain in the neck. I had to pick off the yucky stuff on the stamens so the flowers did not get “dirty” before we could deliver them. Last year someone gave me one gigantic plant, and I called my old principal and he came and got it. Thanks for liking my header. Those are Big House and Little House Mountains that we pass going in and out of town. I am so glad you noticed it. WE have hundreds of photos of these two little mountains at different times of the day and during all the seasons. Happy Saturday
Nice plant
